A New Effort to Bring Business and Financial Support North of Lake Charles

Lake Charles, LA (KPLC) – A partnership between the Southwest Louisiana Center for Health Services and a local credit union provides free services to the community.

“We started a conversation about what we can do on our end to help, and financial services became a huge, huge need,” said Chad Miller.

CEO Chad Miller said the nonprofit Southwest Louisiana Credit Union has opened a branch inside the renovated Southwest Louisiana Center of Health Services. This is a partnership to fill a need in northern Lake Charles.

“We have a full-service branch here at the health center,” Miller said. “We have one full-time employee here. She is truly dedicated to one-on-one financial advice, opening accounts and providing loans to members. »

Miller said this “micro-branch” offers almost all of the same services as their main branches.

Director Dianna Ross said it removed a barrier to health care and financial support in northern Lake Charles.

“Coming in and talking to someone about a loan, refinancing their vehicle, or just picking up the cash they need for the weekend,” Ross said. “I don’t think I can explain how important it is for someone who has the means but especially for someone who doesn’t.”

The permanent branch is a resource that she says is very important to this community.

“For us, as a community health center, that meant we could now serve the whole person — mind, body, soul, financially,” Ross said.

A community meeting will be held next Tuesday, April 26 at the Allen P. August Multipurpose Complex beginning at 6 p.m. .
