We kept our promise – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports
(WSVN) – A salesman promised him a water heater for free, right after he installed an air conditioner. Again they said free. You might think you know where this is taking us, but believe me, it’s never happened before, in tonight’s Help Me Howard with Patrick Fraser.
It started like many other Help Me Howards.
Patrick Fraser: “You have been living in this house for some time.
Oresta Thomas: “About 50 years old.”
But our story with Oresta Thomas will end like no other.
Oresta Thomas: “I let them install the water heater.”
I met Oresta in March. I had just had surgery for skin cancer. She has just had a water heater installed. For free, she thought.
Oresta Thomas: “I asked him, I said, ‘Do I have to pay for this?’ He said, ‘No, ma’am.’
Oresta trusted Magic Climate Control because two years earlier they had installed an air conditioner that Oresta had been told was free.
Oresta Thomas: “He told me I wouldn’t have to pay for it, and I didn’t, and then they sent me a check for $1,000.”
The company gave her $1,000 and she did not receive a bill for the air conditioner.
But after the installation of the water heater, it remained boiling hot.
Oresta Thomas: “I got it in the mail, an invoice from Aqua Finance, for a loan of over $11,000, for a water heater.”
This water heater with papers that showed no price, which should have cost between $1,000 and $2,000, was now going to cost him $11,000.
Oresta Thomas: “I was fit to be attached.”
Oresta tried calling Magic Climate Control. She says they wouldn’t talk to her.
Oresta Thomas: “They put me under stress, just terrible.”
Patrick Fraser: “Do you think you got scammed?
Oresta Thomas: “I know I did.”
Patrick Fraser: “Or did you misunderstand?
Oresta Thomas: “I got scammed. I want this matter settled. I want it rejected.
Well, Howard, how can Oresta prove that her water heater was free? Or is she out of luck?
Howard Finkelstein, 7News legal expert: “Legally, this raises red flags and is extremely suspicious. Oresta’s water heater cost about a tenth or what they charged her. It could be fraud, or if the company has papers that Oresta signed showing the price, they might be out of luck and owe the money, even if the price is outrageous.
I was never able to speak to Eon Singh, the man who ran Magic Climate Control. An office has been closed. At the other, they wouldn’t open the door.
He left a voicemail saying he spoke to Oresta, but I’m not sure because a week after we met her, she was rushed to the hospital.
Two days later, his house caught fire.
A few days later, Oresta Thomas died.
She was gone, but that didn’t take away the promise I made to her.
Yolanda Curinton, Oresta’s niece: “He said, ‘I promised your aunt I’d take care of it,’ and he said, ‘I’m going to do what I promised to do,’ and you you’ll never know what that meant to me and my family.
Magic Climate Control avoiding me, I turned to Aqua Finance, the company that bought the contract from Magic.
When I explained to them what had happened to Oresta. Bill Acheson told me he would take care of everything.
Bill Acheson, Aqua Finance: “We have closed the lady’s account. We have released any lien and removed it from our credit report so that she or the estate does not owe us any money. We have cleaned up all loan records and also terminated the agreement with our dealership. »
We couldn’t tell Oresta that the $11,000 loan was canceled, but her niece Yolanda thinks she knows what she would tell me.
Yolanda Curinton: “She was like, ‘Oh, he knows his [expletive]. That’s how she was. She was direct, and she would have just been thrilled and elated that it was now behind her.
Be blessed, Orestes. When we did our research, this air conditioner wasn’t free either. Oresta didn’t know it, but she paid through her property taxes. Conclusion: nothing is free.
